CHICAGO — May 5, 2003 — StoreNext Retail Technologies LLC today introduced PocketOffice for ISS45, a suite of handheld applications and hardware aimed to give independent grocers and small chains high-end mobile capabilities at a low-end cost.
The system is being shown at the 2003 FMI Show sponsored by the Food Marketing Institute, May 4-6, 2003 at McCormick Place, booth 8707. StoreNext is a joint venture of Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. and Retalix Ltd. (Nasdaq: RTLX).
Available immediately, PocketOffice integrates with StoreNext’s ISS45 point-of-sale (POS) software and is sold as a complete package with Fujitsu’s iPAD pocket-size, retail handheld computer and fast, 11Mbit industry-standard RF network components. Applications operate locally on the iPAD with Windows CE .NET to eliminate response delays, and data is transmitted wirelessly to the ISS45 system.
“With PocketOffice, independent grocers and small chains can perform multiple store functions with a single handheld unit throughout the store,” said Tony van Seventer, head of marketing for StoreNext. “PocketOffice makes in-store tasks more efficient and accurate, cutting operational costs and the grocer’s total cost of ownership.”
PocketOffice initially includes three applications:
- Shelf Audit – ensures price integrity and maintains customer confidence and loyalty by verifying shelf prices and fixing discrepancies in real-time. Shelf audits are the most important item-management function and the top use for handhelds in supermarkets today.
- Item Maintenance – provides online file changes directly into the ISS45 system. It also performs in batch mode, automatically creating and formatting item batches using ISS45’s batch handling, processing and tracking capabilities.
- Q-Buster – solves the leading shopper complaint – long lines. During peak periods, employees can use Q-Buster to break shoppers out of the checkout line and pre-scan their items, increasing throughput without adding lanes. Even the stocking crew can assist with minimal training.
Several other PocketOffice applications, including Grocery Dashboard and Remote Manager Authorization, will be introduced in the next few months.
The complete PocketOffice package – including the Shelf Audit, Item Maintenance and Q-Buster applications; the iPAD unit equipped with a wireless radio card and the 802.11b wireless access point network components – is list-priced at $4,995.
Fujitsu’s 11-ounce iPAD is the lightest-weight handheld device available for retailers. It combines devices used throughout the store – scanner, magnetic- and smart-card reader, keypad with encryption capabilities, and voice over IP phone and video capability – to give the retailer a complete, wireless retail appliance. The Windows CE .NET-based iPAD goes anywhere – to do virtually anything – including inventory management, debit transactions, price verifications, line busting, mobile POS, gift registry, loss prevention and more.
